The Laliberte’s Wedding at Calgary’s Al Azhar Shrine Centre
A Gorgeous Green Day at the Calgary Shrine Centre
Kim Getting Ready
We started our day right at the Calgary Shrine Centre. The Centre boasts a beautiful outdoor space, featuring perfectly manicured green lawns, a man-made lake and light up fountain, and an attractive gazebo at the water’s edge. Tall windows line the walls, and a huge patio wraps around the front of the building. The impressive property sits beside the Bow River, in Northwest Calgary.
While the guys were off getting ready at Kim and Lance’s house, the girls were upstairs at the Shrine Centre in the Ready Room. When we arrived, Christina Kemp with Modern Makeovers was working on hair and makeup, so we took Kim’s gorgeous David’s Bridal dress out onto the patio. From there, we had a unique vantage of the phenomenal lake and grounds. We hung the dress from the rafters and took detail shots of the intricate lace designs while the sunlight shone through.
In the distance, however, several rain clouds were threatening the ceremony. Sure enough, the rains began as the girls were getting ready. Kim had her heart set on getting married outside at the gazebo, so they delayed the ceremony by 15 minutes and watched the weather. As the ceremony time drew near, the clouds opened, and the rains stopped just in time!
Their Ceremony at the Calgary Shrine Centre Gazebo
The ceremony began with the sound of cello and violin, and down the aisle walked Kim. Officiant Bonnie Myers led a sweet and straightforward service, and the couple read their vows to each other. Lance struggled a little with the emotion of the moment, and even Kim, who is a relatively stoic person, had a few tears! It was evident from their genuine and heartfelt vows that these two are very much in love.
After the ceremony, we moved into family photos. Even though the service had begun a little late due to the rain, somehow, we were right back on track for the family shots. Everything seemed to work out perfectly. The sun popped out, and the temperature crawled back up. We took the photos out on the patio, which afforded us the beautiful views of the lake and fountain. The water was calm and smooth, a perfect backdrop.
The Creative Formals at the Calgary Shrine Centre
To begin the creative formals with Kim and Lance, we stepped up into the gazebo and sat the newlyweds on the benches inside. The flower girl peeked in as they chatted, affording us an adorable shot. We then used some strobe lighting as a cloud passed overhead. The darkened sky created the perfect atmosphere for the additional light, and with the lush green trees and pond behind, it was a perfect setting.
We moved around the property, taking advantage of the spraying fountain as a unique backdrop. We shot several photos of Kim and Lance in front of the pond, before heading back to the gazebo to reconnect with the wedding party.
We had a lot of fun with the group, and everyone was just having a great time posing for the shots and goofing around.
The Laliberte Reception at the Calgary Shrine Centre
The reception took place in the Calgary Shrine Centre’s Lower Ballroom, one of two spaces that they use for functions. The room was beautifully decorated, the tables set up with large white and green floral centerpieces.
Kim and Lance made their grand entrance right out onto the dance floor, and began the evening with their first dance to Jon Bellion’s “To My Future Wife.” After their dance, they had a seat, and because everything was running a little ahead of schedule, the emcee opened with a few speeches. The best man told a stirring rendition of his and Lance’s friendship and their brotherhood. He even took the opportunity to get a few digs in at the groom.
The excellent staff at the Calgary Shrine Centre brought out dinner, starting with a beautiful salad of strawberries, mixed greens, and a vinaigrette. For the mains, individual beef wellingtons were the star of the show, surrounded by julienne carrots, roast veggies, potatoes, and gravy.
After the delicious dinner, both sets of parents stood to read their speeches. In a heartfelt moment, Lance’s father told Kim, if he could choose a wife for his son, she would be the one. It was plain to see everyone on both sides of the family are very close, since Lance and Kim first met nearly six years ago!
They then played the shoe game, which they completely crushed, and followed it up with a fun clothespin game. Kim was blindfolded, and the wedding party pinned the clothespins all over his body. She had to blindly find them all, which was hilarious, especially when she had trouble finding a few of the more hidden ones! Lance and Kim then cut into their cake topper, and everyone gathered around for delicious strawberry cupcakes, decorated with brilliant green buttercream icing.
Everyone moved back to the dance floor to watch the father-daughter dance. The DJ Bo Khann Ly jokingly invited Lance up to have a dance Larry (Kim’s dad)! Everyone had a good laugh, and then the young kids took over the dance floor! They were full of energy and purpose, showing their moves with vigor! We showed the newlyweds their same day slideshow and wrapped up our portion of the evening.
