The Uyanwune’s Engagement Session at Calgary’s Phil & Sebastian’s
Kenny and Ify’s Sunset Session in Calgary
How They Met
Kenny and Ify met down in the States on a trip with their mutual friends. They clearly had a spark from the beginning, because they have been together ever since!
Both originally from Nigeria, Kenny has lived in Calgary for nearly ten years, and before that, he moved around the States. They are going to get married toward the end of the year back home in Nigeria, with a cultural ceremony in October, and the religious ceremony in December.
The Engagement Session in Downtown Calgary
We started the engagement session at Reid’s Stationary Store on 17th Avenue in Calgary. Ify was wearing a fantastic multicoloured dress, so we cozied up to the vibrant turquoise brick wall at Reid’s, making the colours in the dress pop. Kenny and Ify were troopers; when we began the session the weather was chilly, and the temperature would only drop as the day continued. Even having just travelled from Nigeria, Ify braved the cold with the best of them.
The Ridge at Rosemont
After Reid’s, we went to the Rosemont dog park on the Northwest end of downtown Calgary. The park overlooks the edge of the city and sits upon the same ridge as the neighbourhood of Crescent Heights. Up on top of the hill, the breeze made things colder than they had been in town, so we moved in and out of the vehicle to keep warm.
Our initial intention, once we had finished up on the ridge, was to head to the George C. King Bridge, the modern connector from East Village to downtown. However, as the sun disappeared, the temperature steadily plummeted. It wasn’t worth waiting for the perfect light in that cold, so we took as many photos as we could up on the ridge, waiting for sunset. And it paid off. The sun dipped below the horizon, giving us a beautiful golden light that shone through the grasses and off the buildings in the distance.
Cap off with a Cuppa
To cap off the evening, we headed into the warmth of Phil & Sebastian’s Coffee Shop, just as they were getting ready to close. The staff were gracious enough to let us linger in the heat, and because they were so close to the end of the day, we had the place to ourselves. The café lives in the old Simmons mattress factory, alongside the restaurant Charbar and bakery Sidewalk Citizen. The historic qualities of the building, such as rough red brick, tall windows, and hardwood floors, lent elegance to the final set. Ify and Kenny changed into their formal attire, and in the end, shared a dance in the magnificent space.
We had a wonderful day with Kenny and Ify, and we hope they love their images as much as we enjoyed photographing them!
