The Dickin’s Wedding at Calgary’s Four Points by Sheraton
A Swing Inspired Wedding for The Dickins
Their Ceremony at the Holy Cross Anglican Church
We began Saturday, July 23 at the Holy Cross Anglican Church in Calgary. The gorgeous church lies just off of Confederation Park Golf Course. The inside of the church is just incredible, and the high dramatic ceilings make an immediate impression. To begin we took some establishing shots of the beautiful wooden backdrop lit with hanging candles.
Down the aisle, the groom Shayne and his best man both wore kilts, complete with sporrans. They looked incredibly sharp as they waited for the big moment!
Then, the music began and Stephanie walked down the aisle in her elegant gown. She looked gorgeous, her hair and makeup was done by Christina Kemp with Modern Makeovers. Reverend Kyle Norman performed the ceremony and kept the couple smiling and laughing throughout. He was a great guy to work with, and had an easy way of speaking that made the ceremony light and fun. After they said their ‘I Do’s’, Shayne and Stephanie signed their documents and officially became man and wife!
The Family Photos Just Across the Street
After the wonderful ceremony, we made our way across 19th street to the nearby green space. We spent some time taking photos of the immediate family before splitting off to do creative formals with the bride and groom.
The Creative Formals in Confederation Park
For the creatives, we headed to Rosemont Community Association nearby, built onto the west side of 10th street. We hung around the main entrance before heading to the east side of 10th street. On the east side lies a gorgeous wooden bridge that spans the creek running through Confederation Park. We used the bridge for several shots of the wedding party, the girls in cherry red flapper-style dresses and the guys in charcoal suits. The time spent on the bridge was so much fun, there were a lot of laughs and the atmosphere was light.
To cross back over the west side of the road we used a huge culvert that passed below. Inside the culvert, we set up a series of lights and shot some really unique photos inside the ribbed tunnel. We were lucky to be under shelter, because not one minute after we entered the culvert, it started to rain! We decided to keep shooting in the shelter while we waited out the storm.
When the rain stopped, Stephanie and Shayne wanted to head over to Riverstone Pub for a quick drink. While they had a drink we got some great shots of the group. They were just hanging out, and sharing a quiet moment before heading back to the reception.
The Dickin Reception in the Willow Ballroom at Four Points by Sheraton
We arrived at the Four Points by Sheraton Calgary Airport for the reception and headed into the elegant and bright Willow Room. The theme of the evening was old-time jazz, and everywhere you looked you could find music notes, LPs, and red accents. The theme was spot on! The menus on the tables were set upon mini records, the head table was lined with music notes and heart filled treble clefs. The side tables all held records and cinnamon heart filled martini glasses with candles inside. The table runners were cherry red, and a red Mr. & Mrs. Dickin sign denoted where the newlyweds would sit. The entrance boasted a giant record as their seating chart, the names of the tables each represented by a famous jazz musician. Towers of music stanza paper lined the room, surrounded by lights. It was truly impressive.
Stephanie and Shayne entered and received all their guests before sitting for dinner.
The Dinner provided by the talented culinary staff at the Four Points
Catering for the meal was all done in-house. The delicious plated dinner featured Caesar salad, chicken breast, and a fabulous New York cheesecake.
Cutting the cake created by Cakes With Attitude
After supper came the speeches, and after speeches, the cake cutting. Their main cake was decorated and designed by Natasha with Cakes with Attitude, and featured a wavy music stanza all the way around. Cupcakes came in both red velvet cream cheese and raspberry buttercream vanilla for everyone to enjoy.
Swing Dancing in the Willow Room
Once we get into the dance, the vibe of the evening kicked up a notch. This is where things really got exciting.
Stephanie and Shayne love to swing dance. They go to lessons and decided to feature it in their wedding. To get everyone involved, one of the bridesmaids and a teacher from their dance studio gave a swing lesson to everyone in attendance. While they were learning the moves, Stephanie slipped away to change into her dancing attire. Everyone was having a great time with the lesson, and it was such an unforgettable part of the evening.
Stephanie returned, and the first dance began. The newlyweds did an impressive choreographed swing dance for their first turn as husband and wife. Next came the mother-son dance, and soon everyone was up on the dance floor joining in. DJ Andy LePage with Jazzed Up Events hit all the right beats as the dance continued.
Another surprise was in store, and someone broke out a karaoke machine. This quickly became one of the favourites of the evening. A group of 30 women belted out ‘Dancing Queen’, the groomsmen crooned to ‘Red Solo Cup’, and the bridesmaids sang ‘I Will Survive’.
The guests and newlyweds continued to party into the evening, continuously alternating between dancing and karaoke. The level of participation was awesome, and everyone was enjoying themselves. The high-energy wedding was such fun, and we were incredibly glad to be a part of it.
