The Cocker’s Wedding on Scotsman Hill Overlooking Downtown Calgary
A Relaxed ’Vow-Renewal’ Party at the Pub
The Creative Formals at Scotsman’s Hill
At around 6:30 pm, we met up with Jodey and Ryan at Scotsman’s Hill. At one time, Jodey lived just around the corner from the Park, and it still holds a special place in her heart. We began with their formal photos, with only the two of them in front of the Calgary skyline. Jodey wore a navy blue top and a tutu, and Ryan wore a floral print shirt and polka dot socks. Their outfits reflected their playful personalities, and let everyone know that the evening was going to be a fun and casual affair. Jodey was also carrying a huge, beautiful bouquet of faux flowers with long stems, which were a perfect complement to their style. After capturing the lovely evening, we headed down the hill to the Dog & Duck, an authentic English pub just off MacLeod Trail. Before reaching the pub, we came to an alley decorated with lilac bushes, so we stopped for a few shots.
The Ceremony at the Dog & Duck Pub
We arrived early to the pub, so we had time to set up for the evening. Outside, we photographed the bride and groom in front of the pub sign and used the stucco walls as a backdrop. The guests began to arrive, and we got ready for the ceremony.
As everyone entered, they had their photograph taken. The picture was then printed and stuck in a scrapbook, with space for the guests to write their messages to the newlyweds. Beside the guestbook, handmade boutonnieres were on offer for the guests. Also on the reception table were their wedding vows and photos from their legal wedding ceremony, which took place a week earlier in Nova Scotia.
When everyone was through and seated, Paul, a friend of the couple and emcee for the evening, introduced Jodey and Ryan to the party as husband and wife. They began by playing a game of ‘Mad Lib Vows,’ wherein Ryan and Jodey would read a set of vows, with black spaces for certain key nouns and verbs. Before the ceremony, guests had been asked to write nouns and verbs and place them in corresponding jars. From those jars, Paul pulled out words for each blank space in the vows, and the newlyweds read out the results. The game was hilarious, earning raucous laughter, especially for some of the more ‘mature’ content.
After the game, they exchanged Ring Pops and followed up with speeches. A few of their friends got up to tell humorous anecdotes about their shared history, before shifting into a more touching tone.
When speeches wrapped up, the rest of the evening continued in the same low-key vein. Guests mingled while the band, who are also friends of the newlyweds, set up for the first dance. We photographed everyone mingling, eating, visiting, and enjoying the evening. For cake cutting, Ryan and Jodey cut into a cheesecake with a black topper and a photo of themselves high-fiving one another. We photographed them up at the bar and grabbed shots of the personal touches around the room. Pictures of Jodey and Ryan as kids and personalized wedding napkins and coasters graced the bar. The simple decorations of hanging lights and helium balloons weighed down with sweets gave a relaxed vibe to the evening.
We had a great time with Jodey and Ryan, and we hope they love the images we captured of their special day. Congratulations to the newlyweds!
