The Correll’s Rocky Mountain Wedding at The Kananaskis Mountain Lodge
A Sweet and Serendipitous Wedding Day in Kananaskis
Sean and Rakhi Getting Ready
On the day of Rakhi and Sean’s wedding, we headed out from rainy Calgary to meet them at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge. The weather wasn’t ideal, especially for the Rockies, but we kept our hopes up. When we arrived, new rivers and puddles were forming from monsoon level rains, and the couple had already made the call to move the ceremony indoors. Despite the sudden move, the newly-renovated Lodge was more than prepared, with an incredible indoor location that incorporated the Lodge’s signature backcountry elegance.
We first met up with Sean and his groomsmen in his Mom’s suite. They were all ready, despite a little mix up with the suit, so we photographed the guys before heading down. Even though the day was already different than Rakhi and Sean had envisioned it, they handled it like pros all day. They didn’t let it get them down, and had some great wedding planners in Lauren and Jessica, who helped them maintain a positive attitude and manage the anxieties that come with wedding day changes.
We headed down to the new ceremony location with the guys, outside of which was a great space with spectacular lighting, symmetrical lines, and the perfect backdrop for Sean and the guys. We then captured the groom tying his laces and gifting his groomsmen watches.
Then, we bounced over to the other side of the property, almost as far as we could go, to meet Rakhi and the women. Hair and makeup were in full swing, Michelle Walsh of Michelle Suffolk-Walsh on hair and a team from Beautiful Calgary Bridge doing the makeup. The girls had a little breakfast buffet set up from the head chef at the Lodge, complete with delicious veggie brie sandwiches with massive chunks of brie, samosas with mint chutney, pancakes, and breakfast burritos.
We photographed the ladies interacting, all done up in their gorgeous dresses. Rakhi’s dress had some beautiful detail, so we made sure to shoot the dress and the phenomenal jewellery she was wearing. We set up a reflection shot in the bathroom while she got into the dress, and finally, did a reveal with her Dad. It was a beautiful moment to witness; we love when dads show emotion!
It was evident that this wedding was about having a good time. Everyone was there to play, have fun, and enjoy themselves. The whole group was happy and goofy all day long, and that’s just who they are.
Their Ceremony at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge
After Rakhi was ready, we headed down to the Mount Kidd Ballroom. We met in the lobby of the space, in front of a beautiful fireplace. The decor set up by Lauren and the team was incredible, with tree stumps, candles, and wooden pillars, which bore the carved initials ‘R&S’.
The ceremony was officiated by Robin Toupin, who led a service that was well-spoken, touching, and succinct. The vows by both Sean and Rakhi were beautiful and heartfelt at the core, with dashes of humour thrown in. Both of them expressed how lucky they were to have each other in their lives.
At the end of the ceremony, we did a big group shot, which turned out wonderfully. Then it was time to move into family formals, and a serendipitous turn in the weather meant we were able to get outside. There was still a bit of a drizzle, but using a little lighting under the patio helped us get great outdoor shots!
The Creative Formals on the Grounds of the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge
Once we’d wrapped up the family formals, we moved on to the wedding party. The group was so full of life and vibrant, and it shows in their photographs. With such an easy group, we were able to move around the beautiful grounds.
The Pomeroy Kananaskis Lodge has an incredible fountain, a fountain that Rakhi and Sean had intended to get married in beside. Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, it wasn’t meant to be. Our luck changed, however, and the rain stopped long enough to allow us to use the fountain for the formal photos. The water-feature is created of series of stones, creating a waterfall that cascades into a pond. We photographed the entire party and then separated the newlyweds for a few more shots.
Worried about the rain, we moved through the locations, watching as a few drops trickled on the pond. From a distance, we photographed Rakhi and Sean at the water’s edge, creating an epic reflection shot.
As we reached the next shooting location at the ridge, the skies once again threatened rain. Thankfully, the dense clouds looked incredible as they hung over the Rockies. It gave us the perfect backdrop to finish the evening, the magnificent Mount Kidd towering over the scene. Rakhi and Sean looked astonishing standing against the vast valleys of Kananaskis.
To wrap up the creative formals, we headed into the dense forests surrounding the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge. Then, Rakhi changed into her more traditional Indian outfit, and we headed over to the reception.
The Correll Reception in the Mount Kidd Ballroom
The reception kicked off with dinner, in the gorgeous ballroom, decorated by planner Lauren. Dinner was a fantastic buffet put on by the talented head chef and team at the Lodge. There was a combination of Irish and Indian food, and a great selection of salads, prime rib, and ravioli with mushroom. The desserts were incredible as well, rounding out the meal with blueberry cheesecakes, brownies, and coconut chocolates. An open bar complemented the meal, and on draught was the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge’s in-house beer.
The speeches that followed dinner were all beautiful; given by both sets of parents, the maid of honour Melanie, the best man Jordan, and Rakhi’s brother Rishi. We followed the speeches with the same day slideshow, and then moved into the first dance.
To end the night, we stepped into the peaceful outdoors with Sean and Rakhi and headed down to the waterfall for a proper finale. We photographed them against the rushing, illuminated water, a romantic image to say goodnight. Then, they returned to Mount Kidd hall to dance, music courtesy of Livin’ and Dancin’ DJ Ben!
We had a beautiful day with the happy couple, and are grateful to have been a part of their special day! We hope they love their images as much as we enjoyed taking them!
