The Doornbos’s Wedding at Calgary’s Glenmore Inn
A Warm Country Wedding
Julie & Curtis’s First Look
On a bright afternoon, we met up with our groom, Curtis, in the massive Fish Creek Park. While we were there, we set up a first look between the bride and groom. We found a beautiful ridge where we stood Curtis, looking out over the park. Not long after, Julie showed up. She looked gorgeous, in a dress from David’s Bridal and hair by Christina Kemp with Modern Makeovers. We walked her up the ridge, and she grabbed onto his shoulder. They had a sweet moment together, and we left them to talk a little before we jumped into the creative formals.
The Creative Formals at Fish Creek Park
The wedding party was a great group to work with, lighthearted, and lots of fun. Everyone wore coordinating cowboy boots with their formal attire, so we had to incorporate them into the shoot. We took a few big group shots up on a plateau and found a great old wooden building to use as a backdrop. Everyone was in such great spirits, judging solely by the number of huge smiles we got in the photographs!
We walked up a tree-lined pathway, on the way falling victim to photobombs from a cute puppy and a serious bicyclist! Down by a creek bed, we photographed Julie and Curtis alone. The whole area was intensely green and gave us so many amazing places to shoot. After a few sun-dappled close ups, it was time to head to the church!
When we arrived, we arranged the family for photos before the ceremony, and then it was time for Curtis and Julie to get married!
Their Ceremony at the Lutheran Church of the Cross
The church was buzzing with excitement when we arrived. Phil and Laura Holck, the husband and wife pastor team at the Lutheran Church of the Cross, officiated the ceremony. They were a great team, working off one another and providing an entirely unique service. At one point, as Phil began a sermon, Laura jokingly stopped him, so he wouldn’t “lose the congregation.” Laura brought out a few sticks and invited one of the children up. She had him break the first stick, which he did with ease. Next, she bundled three sticks together, and this time, he couldn’t break them. With the demonstration, she created a visual metaphor. The three sticks represented the newlyweds and God. By bundling them, she demonstrated how their faith would keep them strong.
Next came a few poems, and then Julie and Curtis lit a unity candle, uniting their two flames into one. Then, they were pronounced husband and wife!
Right after the ceremony, we took a break with the newlyweds and their wedding party. We popped over to Starbucks for coffee and a little photoshoot. Getting behind the counter, we photographed the baristas at work and then relaxed a bit before the reception.
The Doornbos Reception at the Glenmore Inn and Convention Centre
The reception was held at the Glenmore Inn and Convention Centre in the East Ballroom. Julie and Curtis made their grand entrance as Mr. and Mrs. and sat down to dinner. The food, catered by the hotel, came out right away, and featured a delicious array of dishes, from roast beef and bbq chicken to pasta, salads, and desserts.
After dinner, Curtis and Julie sat down to play the shoe game and were impressively on point with their answers. A few heartfelt speeches followed, and a few of the speeches had the guests roaring with laughter. A honeymoon fund container went around the room, and those who contributed got to play a coin toss. The game had elimination rounds until a winner was declared, and presented with a basket of sweet and salty treats and a bottle of wine.
One of Curtis’ groomsmen, David, played a song on the ukulele about Curtis and Julie, blending in their love of rodeo and country. The adorable song rounded out the speeches.
We followed with a slideshow, and then the happy couple cut the beautiful cake made by bridesmaid Hayley. After the bouquet toss, Curtis and Julie shared their first dance as husband and wife to the Garth Brooks song “Wrapped Up in You.” The dance was fun, and everyone got up and partied the night away to a great selection of country music by DJ Daniel from HiTech Productions.
All in all, we had a beautiful day with Curtis and Julie. They were so easygoing and enjoyable to photograph.
