The Sims’ Wedding Welcome Party at the Azul Sensatori Resort Mexico
A Stellar Start to the Sims Wedding
Up and Away to the Azul Sensatori in Mexico
At the crack of dawn, we headed to Calgary International Airport, where we met the bride and groom, for breakfast. Along with Mike and Marge, Steve and Jenna sat down with us for a bite to eat in the new section of the terminal. When we finished our meals, it was time to get ready to board the plane!
We loaded up easily, and the plane ride was smooth and uneventful. We landed, picked up our luggage, and met with a giant bus that would take us to the Azul Sensatori Resort outside of Cancun. Outside of the bus sat a little bar, where we all grabbed a quick drink before heading inside.
Once aboard the bus, our guide gave us the proper run through to prepare us for our stay in the Mexican Caribbean. Number one: the salsa is hot, even if they say it isn’t. Two: Wear a lot of sunscreen. And three: drink lots and lots of water!
On the way to the resort, we were treated to 20 peso beer, and the party began.
We arrived at the resort and made sure to take a fun hyper lapse of the guests disembarking. When we entered the hotel, a pleasant spa aroma hit us. The staff handed us cold, scented towels, a welcome sight in the heat of southeastern Mexico.
As we waited to check in, mimosas and champagne made the rounds. A table on the side had been set up with munchies, water, and coffee for us all to enjoy. All in all, it was a pretty stellar reception to the resort!
A Nautical Welcome Party
The next day, Jenna and Steve had a welcome party for everyone. We all gathered in the restaurant at the resort, where a private area awaited us. The Welcome Party was set up as a nautical themed costume party, with no coconut bras or speedos allowed for obvious reasons. Some of the guests were reserved in their costumes, but some partook wholeheartedly.
As part of the party, a costume contest took place. Kyle, a guy who stands at 6’4″, dressed up as a little sailor boy. He is a huge guy, and with his full sleeve tattoos, he looked impressive. Curtis and Christie arrived in grass skirts and got a great reaction from the guests. Mike and Marge rolled in, wearing pants that suspended their waistlines. She made the pants expand with hula hoops, and on top, they wore shirts that asked ‘Which Way to the Buffet?’. Finally, two girls entered, dressed in those funny inflatable t-rex costumes. Atop their heads, they donned sailor caps. They sat in a cardboard boat, complete with the name SS Waughsims (a combo of both the bride and groom’s surnames).
Jenna’s younger brother Rylan received honourable mention because he wore a Hawaiian shirt that he made in the eleventh grade. He proudly proclaimed that it still fit today! After the contest, dinner was served. It was a beautifully plated meal of beef or chicken, Caesar salad, soup, mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, and cheesecake. A short and sweet speech followed dinner.

The Welcome Party Gift Bags
At the party, everyone received a personalized gift bag. Inside was a little booklet talking about Jenna and Steve. It then gave way to the program for the whole wedding. Guesterly by Chatbook made the books. They are a company that creates gorgeous personalized lookbooks for all sorts of occasions. The first page contained the detailed itinerary for the week. The itinerary was excellent, and Steve and Jenna put in a lot of effort to make sure everyone would enjoy their holiday. The bags were impressive and detailed and added a nice touch to the party.
Some of the more personal items in the bags were photos for the bridal party and an engagement photo from their session at Grassi Lakes in Canmore. We even received our own bags, complete with little hangover kits.
One of the groomsmen received a tambourine in his bag, an inside joke that hearkened back to their university days. The tambourine would reappear in a few days time…
