The Sims Engagement Session at Grassi Lakes

Getting Her Hair and Makeup Done by Modern Makeovers

We met Jenna at her and Steve’s apartment in downtown Calgary where Christina Kemp with Modern Makeovers was getting her ready for the shoot. We had a little time until Steve arrived home, so we photographed Jenna’s engagement ring beside their Save the Dates and wedding centerpieces. The airline ticket Save the Date cards are a wink at the fact that they are having a destination wedding in Mexico. The centerpieces are white vases with a lace like decoration around the tops. We lit them from the inside and let the light shine through, and we placed the ring on top to shimmering effect.

Jenna and Steve’s Engagement

During a drive home with her coworker Joe, he asked Jenna if she was seeing anyone. When she replied no, he mentioned that he had a guy for her. He called Steve up on speakerphone right then and there, and asked him a bunch of questions. All the while Steve was completely unaware he was on speaker! The two set up a date, but randomly ended up running into each other first! Needless to say, they hit it off!

One night, the two of them went out to a party, and Steve secretly brought the ring along.
He didn’t end up proposing at the party, but found the perfect opportunity when they were home together on the balcony. Unfortunately, when he went to get the ring, Jenna followed him inside! He hid the box under the couch cushions, and when they sat together, she became suspicious of his actions. She questioned him about it, and finally he pulled the ring out and got down on one knee!

The Engagement Shoot in the Rockies

When Steve arrived we packed up and headed out toward Canmore for the session. Once there we hit the trail to the Grassi lakes, two majestic turquoise lakes nestled between Mt. Rundle and the Three Sisters Mountain. We parked at the foot of the hiking trail and headed up the more difficult of the two trails to the lake. On our way up the trail we photographed the couple amongst the towering trees, the leaves changing with the season. This path took us along the ridge of the lakes and up to a gorgeous waterfall that drops into the canyon below. We got some gorgeous shots of Steve and Jenna in front of the waterfall and continued up to the top of the trail.

Once at the top they changed into their more formal outfits, and we used the blue-green lakes as the centerpiece for this part of the session. The calm evening provided some beautiful reflection shots off the glasslike water.

As the sun was setting, we shot them as silhouettes against the glowing pink mountain ranges. We rounded out the shoot with a few shots of Jenna and Steve lying in amongst the foliage.

Steve and Jenna were easy going, and his hilarious sense of humor made the session enjoyable. As we headed down the easy path back to the cars, we lost the light, but were greeted to the sight of the moon rising over the Rockies. It was a perfect end to a nature themed session.
