The Brouwers’ Engagement Session at Okotoks’s Big Rock
A Blue Sky at the Big Rock
Getting to Know Crystal and David
We met up with Crystal and David for their engagement session on a beautiful spring afternoon. As neighbours living in the same cul-de-sac, they eventually became friends. Their relationship eventually grew into something more, and on July 7th, David proposed. It only fits that they will be married exactly one year later, on July 7th, 2017. For most of their relationship, they’ve kept things separate, but once they decided to get married, they moved forward to combine their lives.
The day began with hair and makeup by the talented Michelle Suffolk-Walsh, who will also be taking care of Crystal’s bridal style on their wedding day.
The Engagement Session at The Big Rock
We headed out to the Big Rock, a famous location in Southern Alberta near Okotoks. The massive rock is a glacial erratic, a stone that has moved with a melting glacier. Throughout the region, these mammoths dot the landscape, stretching from Jasper to Montana. This giant rock arrived from Athabasca on the back of the glacier that covered the prairie. The Big Rock is made of quartzite, and is hard and stratified. The layers made for a unique and varied backdrop for photos.
When we arrived, we started right away, using all the variances in the rock face as locations. There were so many great places to shoot, that we spent the whole evening just wandering around the immediate area. Crystal and David began in casual outfits: she in denim and knee-high boots, he in a red plaid. We had a beautiful bright blue sky that stretched across the golden prairie as far as the eye could see.
Then, the fluffy white clouds disappeared, making way for a dramatic skyline. To match the mood, Crystal changed into a flowy white dress and David into a leather jacket. As the sun moved through the clouds, it created plenty of gorgeous backdrops. It broke through the clouds, letting the heavens shine through. Then, the sun blazed across the sky, giving us an utterly beautiful silhouette of Crystal and David.
The quartzite splits right down the middle, so we slipped between the two giant pieces and took some lighting inside with us. It gave the area a cavern-like appearance for some beautiful shots. Right at the end of the shoot, a plane flew overhead, leaving a jet stream trailing in its wake. Against the darkening sky, we photographed Crystal and Dave, as the sun set behind them. We had a lovely day with the easygoing couple, and we hope you enjoy their beautiful images!
