The Higgins’s Engagement Session at Calgary’s Baker Park

A Baby, A Puppy, and Tree Lined Lanes

Laura and Patrick’s Story

Laura and Patrick first met in school. They were both working on master’s degrees in social sciences and had several classes together. Laura remembers being drawn to him the first time he walked into class in his leather jacket and motorcycle helmet. Through the first year of the program, they got to know one another. He admitted that he doesn’t do well with goodbyes, so after the final class, he just evaporated. Over the summer, Laura sent Patrick and email, asking which classes he was enrolled in for their second year. Eventually, Patrick asked Laura out for a drink, and the rest is history.

The Sunrise Engagement

After about a year together, he decided it was time to seal the deal. They had talked about marriage, and Laura had even given him a few guidelines on rings. She wanted something simple, and not too flashy. He took a friend with him to help him pick out the ring, and then it was time to set a proposal plan in motion.

The couple headed out to the Maritimes for a holiday, and he brought along his guitar which he had recently started playing. Laura was immediately suspicious.

His whole plan was to propose in a coastal cove as the sun was setting, but he didn’t consider that out east, the sun sets over land.

So instead, he woke Laura up early in the morning, guitar in hand, and they walked out to a cliff overlooking the open ocean. Her suspicion mounted.

He was shaking, not only because he was proposing, but because he had recently learned to play guitar specifically for this moment. Neither of them remember much after that because the moment was so emotionally intense! But, she did say yes!

The plan was to get married in the summer of 2016, but Laura and Patrick got a surprise instead. In August, they welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Ella, into the world. They moved the wedding to the summer of this year, and because Ella will almost be a year old, she can be part of the celebration.

On another positive, the day they had originally picked for their wedding was intensely stormy! Torrential rains, winds, and even hail plagued the day! So, this year, Laura and Patrick are looking forward to sunny weather!

The Engagement Session in Baker Park

For Laura and Patrick’s engagement session, we headed over to Baker Park. The beautiful park is popular for weddings and opposite to Bowness Park across the Bow River.

They brought along their adorable daughter and their cute puppy Farley for the shoot. The session began with shots of Ella. She’s still not quite sitting up on her own, so we started with lots of shots of Ella in the arms of her mom and dad. A cooperative and smiley baby, Ella had never been on the grass before, so at first, she was a bit tentative, lifting her feet, so she didn’t have to touch it. Once she was down, she enjoyed being in the grass and found exploration fun. We brought Farley into the shot, and he sat obedient and tall next to the baby.

Patrick wanted a few shots of Ella in a bright pink flower-print dress, and even though they expressed her dislike of dresses, she wore it without fuss. We rounded out the first half hour with a few more shots of Farley and Ella, before sending them with Alex, her caretaker for the evening.

Then it was off into the woods with mom and dad. Down a red shale path, we wandered through two columns of towering evergreens. We didn’t realize that Baker Park is an active frolfing (Frisbee-Golf, Disc-Golf) spot, so the flying Frisbees surprised us! Once we were in the shelter of the trees, we were treated to a sprinkle of rain. From what we heard, the rest of the city was getting pummelled, but we only got a light shower. The raindrops were quite large, making them perfect for photographing. We set up lighting behind Patrick and Laura, which illuminated the rain drops like sparkling globes.

They changed outfits, and we took a walk, where we found a large swooping evergreen. Underneath the boughs there was room enough to stand, so we ducked into the shelter. We spent quite a bit of time in the tree, because it was such a unique spot, and gave us incredible photos.
Further down the path, we came across a tree that glowed with a chartreuse hue. We wrapped up the shoot after snapping a few more shots in the park.

We had a lovely time with Laura and Patrick. They are such a sweet couple, and hope you enjoy their beautiful photos!
