The Walton-Hutchison’s Wedding at Calgary’s Lougheed House

A Vibrant Wedding with a Vintage Vibe

How They Met

When Michael’s sister first introduced him to her friend Paige, the 13-year-old was unaware of how his life was about to change. Paige and Michael got to know one another and quickly became friends. Then, something changed. On a walk home one night they had an all-consuming talk, focused only on each other. The two hit it off, and have been together ever since. Fast forward to May of 2017 and they were ready to tie the knot.

Paige and Michael Getting Ready

On a Friday afternoon, we headed down to the historic Lougheed House in the Beltline district of Calgary. Built in 1891 by James Lougheed and Lady Isabella, the sandstone mansion is an outstanding Victorian era monument in Canada. Lougheed House became a National Historic Site in 1992 and still sits on the original 2.8-acre estate.

When we arrived, Paige and Michael were both ready to go, needing only a few last-minute touch-ups. We first met up with Michael in the basement library of Lougheed House, relaxing with his groomsmen before the wedding. We got a couple of quick photos of the guys before heading upstairs to visit the bride in her ready room. The room was number 13… Paige’s lucky number. Lana from Main Image Hair Design pinned Paige’s hair up into a vintage up-do to match the theme of the wedding. With a lace ‘Essence of Australia’ dress from Embrace Fashion, and matching lace shoes, Paige fit into the Victorian vibe of Lougheed House. While she was getting dressed, she had a minor gown malfunction, but her mom fixed it in no time! The adorable flower girl Cali, Paige’s niece, was playing a little shy with the camera at first. But, she warmed up to us quickly and gave us some amazing smiles!

The last touch was the veil. Paige’s mom, who up until that point had remained dry-eyed, became emotional as she pinned the veil in her daughter’s hair.

Their Ceremony at Lougheed House

The guys came up from the basement library and met officiant Tamara Jones, who prepped them before heading in for the ceremony.

Then, the wedding began. When Paige was ready, the girls made their way down the beautiful wooden staircase. Her father, in kilt and sporran, waited anxiously at the bottom. They walked into the room together, big smiles on their faces.

During the ceremony, Michael was nervous and was trying to steady his shaking hands by holding onto Paige’s. Tamara notices their hands shaking and thoughtfully reassured the bride by touching her hands, even though it was Michael that could have used the comfort.

The ceremony was sweet and unique. Paige and Michael exchanged vows and bottles of black tattoo ink! Then it was time for a prosecco toast! The newlyweds drank from black custom champagne flutes, engraved with sugar skulls.

Immediately after the ceremony, we jumped into family photos. We got everyone out onto the front garden while the other guests enjoyed cocktail hour.

The Creative Formals at Lougheed House Gardens

We moved right into the creative formal photos, and let the family go inside while we photographed the wedding party. Out in the front gardens, we used the building’s beautiful sandstone façade and greenery for the shots. After individuals of the wedding party, we moved on to photos of the newlyweds together. Once again, the large sandstone bricks made for a lovely backdrop. We then moved them into the trees and took a few shots of the happy couple under Paige’s veil.

The Walton Reception in the Lougheed House Ballroom

Paige and Michael made their grand entrance into the ballroom, and the reception began. Speeches kicked off the night, starting with the parents, and moving to the maid of honour and best man. Then, the floor opened for speeches from the guests.

The congregation took a break for delicious hors d’oeuvre from Lougheed House, followed by the cutting of a tasty cake from Craves Cupcakes. All the while, a slideshow created by Paige’s sister ran in the background.

Michael and Paige’s shared their first dance as husband and wife to the song “Love Spell” by Ryan Huston. They followed their first dance with a father-daughter/mother-son dance. Then, the bridal party got up, and we shot a hyper-lapse as they did a ‘snowball’ dance. In the dance, each time someone would yell “SNOWBALL,” the dancers would grab a new partner from the guests. It was a fun way to get everyone up! The party continued into the night with midnight lunch pizza and an eclectic variety of music by the DJ from Hype Entertainment.
